ABOUT THIS CUBE
In addition to displaying our hotel’s information for your stay, this cube is the product of a groundbreaking upcycling program, offering a new use for discarded oyster shells by turning them into the city’s preferred building material: cement.
Our mission-driven hotel aided the successful pilot program which transformed the shells of oysters served at our buffet restaurant, The Astor, into alternative raw material for more sustainable cement production. This unique cross-sector program is the first of its kind in Hong Kong and aims to eventually mitigate the environmental impacts of transporting limestone from overseas. The oyster shells are utilized to create a limestone alternative, a key ingredient that constitutes 80% of cement.
Supported by Eaton’s parent company, The Great Eagle Group and Langham Hospitality Group, the program is a collaboration with Hong Kong’s leading cement manufacturer, Green Island Cement, which has successfully upcycled nine tonnes of oyster shells from Eaton HK as well as its sister hotel, The Langham, Hong Kong as of August 2024, since the program’s inception in March 2023.
In a move to further promote sustainability and showcase the program's achievements, we are unveiling a range of lifestyle items, including this in-room QR code cube, as well as a new cocktail at our terrace bar, Terrible Baby. These items, which embody the hotel's dedication to environmental stewardship, will allow guests and the public to be more aware of Eaton HK's sustainable ethos.
