Earlier this month, we had the pleasure of hosting DJ-writer-music consultant-artist manager-label head Elijah in partnership with Mixmag Asia and Y2K for a lecture and DJ night here at Eaton HK. Elijah—whose Yellow Squares series has taken over the creative landscape the past few years as a source of inspiration, conversation, and consternation to some—presented a talk on his experiences in the music industry and personal philosophies that guide him in creating these squares. The notes touch on everything from our ever-changing relationship with social media to questions on whether we are collectively upholding the tenets of the musical movements that we claim to represent. A panel of local creatives also joined him to further talk about what the landscape for people wanting to create tings in Hong Kong look like, discussing the challenges, opportunities and everything in between.
For those who weren’t able to make it to the lecture, Cheryl and James, the hosts of Mystery Train radio caught up with Elijah on Eaton Radio a day before the event and discussed a plethora of topics addressed in the Yellow Squares series, ranging from the popularity of DJing, what it means to gatekeep, the role of expertise and overthinking in artistry, the importance of ideas and strategies being able to scale, and more. Tune in for a truly multidisciplinary chat that applies to more than just those in music or creative spaces. Watch the full interview in the video below.
