Tuning the Undercommons
Tuning the Undercommons arrives at Eaton Radio with a queer radio DJ session and zine-making workshop rooted in DIY transmission. Genre-blending sound and folded pages open an intimate, unofficial space for exchange.
The queerness of DJs and zine-makers here is a practice of futurity. As SOPHIE reminds us, “the past isn’t sexy, the future is sexy” which is a refusal of nostalgia and a turn toward what has yet to arrive. DJs tune into unnamed frequencies; zines follow the same impulse: cut, paste, staple toward worlds not yet here.
Echoing José Esteban Muñoz, "queerness is that thing that lets us feel this world is not enough… a concrete possibility for another world." For this afternoon, the radio booth and zine table become sites of that missing world. It is a quiet, ongoing DIY construction. Between decks and pages, queerness becomes a future to tune into.
Participants are invited to bring any sound source that they love or that inspires them whether streaming music, USB, CD, vinyl, or even writing, drawings, notes, etc. — to use as raw material for zine-making.
