RED LINE
Celebrate the latest addition to Eaton House: Blu Murphy's REDLINE. On ongoing display in Eaton House starting September 21, 2024.
Join Eaton House and Washington, DC-based mixed media artist, educator, and photographer, Blu Murphy, to celebrate REDLINE going on view as a large-scale, ongoing part of Eaton House.
The program will include music, drinks, opportunities to meet Blu and hear directly about her process, as well as an immersive visual experience, disigned by the artist, herself.
Part of Murphy's larger REDLINE series, the work encourages viewers to connect the individual pieces in a tangible way. The materials used in the series are limitless and generally include leather, collage, textiles, fabrics, and photography. The purpose of REDLINE is to highlight subjects through use of various textures, representing them individuals and urban culture. The red line of quilted fabric that covers the eyes of my subjects in this work is a visual representation of the blinding educational trap “redlining” creates in low-income black communities.
Further, Murphy's use of an up-cycled, hand-painted or fabric -wrapped frames directly correlates with the emotional trauma suffered by disenfranchised individuals — many of whom often express feelings of being discarded, unnoticed, and deemed invaluable.
Blu Murphy's art showcases these individuals—their stories and experiences—as the masterpieces they truly are.
