PRIDE 2023 | Public Talk: Zeroing in AIDS - AIDS Quilt Making

This three-day workshop will unfold the often-forgotten history of the AIDS Memorial Quilt through education, as well as raise the public awareness toward the "Getting to Zero" Initiative (zero new HIV infections, zero HIV-related deaths, and zero HIV-related discrimination). This powerful art form was created as a tool for honoring the lives of those who lost to AIDS and as a means of healing for AIDS survivors, caretakers and supporters.

The workshop offers a unique opportunity for cross-generational conversation within the LGBTQ+ community. Younger generations can learn from rarely seen panels created by the community during the 1980s and 90s in Hong Kong, inherit the spirit and knowledge of this creative change-making act during the AIDS crisis, and continue the fight against stigma, denial, and hate for a just future.

In the first session, GGHK and CASO will introduce the tradition of quilt-making and the design concepts and storytelling techniques behind the panels. Also, invited guests share their experience on making quilts to spread the message of hope and remembrance about the AIDS Epidemic.

The quilt panels created during the workshops will be exhibited at Eaton HK during Gay Games Hong Kong in November 2023.
