Girls, Manga, & Cuteness: A Queer Japanese History
What kind of queer history exists with girls’ manga/anime and cute culture in Japan? How does Japanese popular culture suggest possibilities for feminisms very different from the stances of “radical feminists” in Hong Kong/China? Can pink, cute, sparkly, and flowery things be “feminist?” Are you a BL fan who wants to learn more about history behind boys’ love? Is it okay to be in love with an anime character?
This is an introductory lecture outlining history, basic theories, and issues discussed by scholars of popular culture in Japan.
The instructor Dr. Grace En-Yi Ting, Assistant Professor from Gender Studies Programme, The University of Hong Kong will invite attendees to share about their own experiences during/after the lecture. Feel free to bring a favorite cute plush or toy (manga-/anime-related or not) with you or wear a fun outfit!
