<p><strong>Space Is the Place (1974), Sun Ra’s iconic sci-fi adventure, plus a collection of shorts exploring Afro-Futurism curated by Alexis Aggrey.</strong></p><p>.</p><p>.</p><p>Sun Ra’s iconic sci-fi adventure and a collection of shorts exploring Afro-Futurism introduced and curated by local filmmaker, Alexis Aggrey.</p><p>Eaton Cinema- 1201 K St. NW</p><p><br></p><p>Space Is The Place, 1974 Director John Coney, (85 min)</p><p>Sun Ra’s cinematic vehicle of “alter-destiny” and Afro-futurism, Space is the Place is a combination of neo-blaxploitation, sci-fi, performance footage, and a signal to his brothers and sisters that Outer Space is indeed the place for salvation. In it, the avant-jazz composer, musician, poet, and prophet plays himself, returning to Earth from a new and distant planet in his music-powered spaceship and on “the other side of time.”</p><p><br></p><p>Shot in 1970s Oakland, California, Ra brings with him a plea to young black folks to return with him to Outer Space, where they can really exist, as “alter-destiny” posits, in “a zone where racism [is] inoperative, where blacks [can] make their own destinies” (Jon Pareles, the New York Times)</p><p><br></p><p>This screening will be preceded by a program of shorts exploring Afro-Futurism introduced and curated by local filmmaker, Alexis Aggrey.</p><p>- NOISE GATE (2013) is an experimental sci-fi short film about a dimensional traveling Scientist who is in search of the ultimate reality. His only passage into that realm is something called the NOISE GATE. Directed by Donovan Vim Crony</p><p>- DEPARTURE (2017) is a noir jazz sci-fi short film based around the ideas of galactic beings who have transcended the physical body, but are brought back in order to do research that may help them take on new forms and discover a new home.
